Can anyone out there ID a mushroom from some pictures ?
We found what we believe are Matsutake mushrooms

the skillet.

That much I know.
I thought I give it a little more of a try than "I don't know" since
I know little or nothing

there are many OLD shroomers,
there are many BOLD shroomers,
but there are very few OLD and BOLD shroomers.

I read somewhere that something like 95% of all mushrooms are poisonous.
if you don't KNOW FOR A FACT -- don't eat them.

Wrong, of the thousands of different kinds of mushrooms out there only
about 100 are poisonous.

Understanding is a wellspring of life unto him that hath it:
but the instruction of fools is folly.

Hm. You're saying that I'm wrong -- or what I read is wrong?

I qualified it -- "what I read" - didn't say it's fact or "i have personal
knowledge".

This may help you: http://www.agarics.org

This site aims only to assist identification, not to guarantee correct
identity; refer also to more-detailed references. Never rely only on this
site to identify fungi to eat! Eating some fungi can easily kill.

You really need to have an ID person have the mushroom in his hand to make
a
positive ID. You can get a couple good books and take a spore print to
help
narrow it down.

Goto psms.org or www.scmsfungi.org. These are the two mushroom clubs in
the
area. they both have very qualified ID people. Dues for PSMS are $25/yr
and
dues for Snohomish County Mycological Society are about $12.50.

Send them an email and I am sure someone will help. A couple good books
are
the Audubon Guide to Mushrooms and "All the Rain Promises" by David
Aurora.
They both have great pictures and guides for identifying mushrooms.

The mushroom hunters matra: When in doubt, throw it out! Be sure and check
out some sites on the web about poisonous mushrooms--they are very
interesting.

Call the Ore. Mycological Society. One member is Maggie Rogers who lives
in the Ladd addtion in Portland. Listed in the Portland phone book. Be
careful. The mushroom can look like a similar one that is the deadly
Amanita!

so where are these pictures?
(pictures won't ever tell you that they are matsutake,
but might show enough to tell you that they are not).

alt.nature.mushrooms has some ID people around who like
to look at pictures.

your local neighborhood asian market might have
samples to buy for side-by-side comparison.

since matsutake are relatively rare, i'd guess you
have something best given to the compost pile.
if found anywhere west of cascades, even more so.
if lacking a tapering stipe, then definately compost.

as another poster noted, check out your local myco society.
Portland region has Oregon Mycological Society, meets 4th
monday each month, lots of fun, http://www.wildmushrooms.org

I hope the other guy doesn't "just eat the damned things." I know of a guy
who destroyed his liver eating a wrong mushroom. The poster might want to
ask around alt.culture.oregon. There's some great books at Powell's, too.
